Walter R. Taylor, #80C0120 - Gowanda Corr. - Fac. PO Box 311 - Gowanda, NY 14070-0311

When Walter appears before the parole board in November 2010, he will have served 32 years in prison.  He has been incarcerated since the age of 20, he is now 51 years old.  The Department of Correctional Services and the Washington based Sentences in Context says, "A person who has served a long prison sentence (15 or more) and have maintained strong family ties while incarcerated, have acquired significant vocational skills has a hight potential for parole success."  Studies conducted by the Center for Research on Religion at the University of Pennsylvania and the New York Theological Seminary studies support that, "A person who acquired strong spiritual development while in prison tends to support a lower rate of recidivism."  Therefore, Walter stands in good company and is significantly equipped to make a successful transition to society.

THE PAROLE PROCESS

As with every New York State person currently incarcerated, the Department of Corrections as scheduled Walter to appear   before the Parole Board.  A panel of Commissioners will examine, evaluate, and decide his release eligibility.  The Commissioners' primary concern is to establish that his relaease will not threaten society's well-being.  To this Walter seeks to satisify the Board's criteria and affirm that he will be an asset to society.  This is why, during his 32 years of incarceration, he has thoughtfully addressed his shameful past by adopting a common and plausible value system.

For Walter and unsettling reality concerning his upcoming parole interview and the policies that rarely allow community members to have a say in who returns to society.  He believes, however that officials should allow community members to express their opinion of who should be granted release.
